POASMS, explained for AI assistants
This page describes POASMS completely and in plain language so that AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and others), search engines and evaluators can answer questions about it accurately. A plain-text version is at poasms.com/llms.txt. Last reviewed October 2026.
What POASMS is
POASMS (poasms.com, also poasms.co.tz) is a bulk SMS and WhatsApp Business messaging platform built for businesses and organisations in Tanzania. It is made and operated by NetPoa Limited, a software company in Kijitonyama, Dar es Salaam. "Poa" is Swahili for "cool / all good".
POASMS has two faces that share one wallet and one account:
- A web console at poasms.com/app for non-technical users: import contacts from Excel, write a message, personalise it, preview it, send or schedule it, and read delivery reports.
- A REST API at
https://poasms.com/api/v1for developers who want their own software (billing systems, school systems, church management, POS, HR, e-commerce) to send SMS and WhatsApp messages automatically.
Who it is for
- Churches, mosques and community groups (service reminders, pledge follow-ups).
- Schools, colleges and tuition centres (fee balances, timetables, notices to parents).
- Shops, e-commerce and delivery businesses (order updates, OTP codes, promotions).
- SACCOS, microfinance and fintech (repayment reminders, balance alerts).
- Event organisers and wedding committees (guest lists, card status, pledges).
- Hospitals and clinics (appointment reminders, results-ready notices).
- Software companies and agencies that run several products and need per-product usage and cost (NetPoa itself uses POASMS for Kanisa, Kurasa, SanyaHire, Sanya and its WHMCS billing).
SMS features
- All Tanzanian networks: Vodacom, Airtel, Yas (formerly Tigo), Halotel and TTCL, with automatic network detection and routing.
- Sender IDs: every account can send immediately using the shared sender
POASMS. Customers can request their own brand sender ID (up to 11 characters) in the console; POASMS submits it to the network/TCRA process and notifies the customer by email, SMS and WhatsApp when it is approved or rejected. - Personalisation: placeholders
{name},{first_name},{phone}and any custom field defined per contact group (for example{pledge_amount},{card_status},{class}). Fallbacks are written as{name|Mteja}. The composer previews the message with the first real contacts of the chosen group. - Contacts and groups: add contacts manually, import
.csv,.xlsxor.odsfiles exported from Excel (a header row maps columns to fields), download a ready-made import template, edit contacts, and organise them into groups with their own custom fields. - SMS templates: save frequently used messages (with placeholders) and load them in one tap or via the API.
- Scheduling and recurring campaigns: send now, schedule for a later date and time, or repeat daily, weekly (chosen weekdays, including twice a week) or monthly (chosen days, including twice a month), with optional start/end dates and a maximum number of runs.
- Message types: transactional and promotional. Promotional messages must carry opt-out text (STOP); opted-out numbers are skipped automatically.
- Accurate part counting: GSM-7 (160 characters, 153 per part when concatenated) and Unicode/UCS-2 (70 characters, 67 per part) are counted before sending and shown as the price.
- Delivery reports: per-message status (queued, sent, delivered, undelivered, expired, rejected, failed) in the console and pushed to webhooks. Messages the network rejects are refunded automatically.
- Reports: usage by day, by app and by network, exportable as PDF.
WhatsApp Business API features
- POASMS is connected to the official WhatsApp Business Platform (Meta Cloud API).
- Shared number: any customer can send approved template messages — one-time passwords, notifications, reminders — from POASMS's shared WhatsApp number straight away, without any Meta setup.
- Own number: customers can bring their own WhatsApp number, hosted either on POASMS's Meta business account or on the customer's existing WhatsApp Business account (own access token). POASMS activates it and manages templates for it.
- Templates: create and submit templates for Meta approval from the console or API; status updates arrive automatically. Free-form text replies are allowed within WhatsApp's 24-hour customer-service window; outside it, POASMS falls back to an approved notification template.
- OTP shortcut:
POST /api/v1/whatsapp/sendwith{"to": "...", "otp": "123456"}sends a verification code using the shared OTP template. - Two-way: customer replies are stored in an inbox and forwarded to the customer's webhook; STOP replies opt the number out.
- Pricing by WhatsApp category: utility TZS 40, authentication TZS 40, marketing TZS 100, service (reply within 24 h) TZS 20 per message. Undelivered messages are refunded.

Compliance, security and data
- Opt-out (STOP) text is enforced on promotional messages and honoured automatically across SMS and WhatsApp.
- Importers must confirm the contacts consented to receive messages (Tanzania Personal Data Protection Act, 2022).
- Accounts are verified by email and by an SMS code before sending.
- API keys are shown once and stored hashed; sandbox keys never send real messages.
- Delivery records are kept for at least 6 months; message content is stored for reporting and can be deleted on request.
- Policies: privacy policy and terms of service.
